Most of Safavieh's handmade rugs are patterned after ancient Persian designs. The names given to these rugs (such as Tabriz, Kerman, Agra, Aubusson, etc.) are often derived from the area in which they were designed. Different Persian towns are noted for different types of designs, such as floral, medallions, action scenes, or geometric patterns. Weavers in various locations often use different types and numbers of knots, as well as different wool/silk combinations.
