Eduardo Rodriguez of DSGNER Interior Design and Staging may have started his career with a passion for fashion, but these days the nationally recognized designer is more focused on what’s on the inside (of the house that is)! When Real Simple magazine embarked on its first renovation Showhouse – a 1902 Victorian home – Rodriguez jumped at the chance to be a part of it

He was tasked with bringing a breath of fresh air into to the home’s historic wrap-around porch and backyard deck, knowing right away that Frontgate’s unmatched assortment of timeless outdoor decor would fit the bill. We caught up with Rodriguez to learn more about the design experience and how Frontgate’s trade program helped him bring his vision to life.

FG: We can’t wait to hear what it was like working with Real Simple as a client! But before we dive in, let’s start with what made you want to become a designer?

ER: I’ve always been fascinated by everything creative. I began my design journey in the fashion industry back in my native Venezuela where I established my own label. I transitioned to interiors after moving to Los Angeles, where I was able to explore [the whole] gamut of the design world.

FG: The Real Simple Showhouse was a historic renovation, with each room brought to life by a different designer with a unique personality and point of view. Was there a specific ask from Real Simple regarding the concept of the outdoor space? What was your inspiration?

ER: Real Simple gave me free range when it came to the design of the outdoor areas of the house. My main inspiration [in] this case was the architecture and color palette of the exterior of the house. I’m a firm believer that the design concept of outdoor spaces should complement the look and feel of the home itself. I was lucky to work with amazing outdoor areas that gave me the opportunity to designate specific living spaces: lounging, dining, etc.

FG: What stood out to you about the Frontgate pieces you chose? What features or design elements appealed to you for this space?

ER: I feel the right accessories make all the difference. The textures, materials and vibe of the accessories I selected [from Frontgate] is what I needed to bring the Scandinavian concept I had come up with for the outdoor spaces. The Liselle Arm Chairs I used for the dining area in the wraparound porch were the right touch that added warmth, comfort and texture to the black-and-white color palette of my design concept. Materials and finishes are key when designing outdoor spaces, so this was of utmost importance since I needed pieces that were resistant to the elements.

FG: How do trade programs like Frontgate’s help you do your job better?

ER: Trade programs give designers the opportunity to foster a relationship with vendors and provide the support of a team of professionals that help make the design process go a lot smoother. Frontgate’s amazing selection of outdoor furnishings made my job a lot easier when it came to sourcing pieces that worked for my design concept. The combination of style and comfort is what I always look for […] and the known quality of Frontgate’s selection gave me the reassurance I was aiming for.

FG: What element should every outdoor living space have?

ER: Because each space is unique, more than a specific element, I believe every outdoor space needs to be comfortable and welcoming. Whether a small balcony or larger terrace, every outdoor room needs to be a place to relax and enjoy with family and friends. People often don’t plan their outdoor spaces according to how they are going to use them. It’s important to identify ahead of time whether it should be designed for lounging, eating and/or entertaining.
